Weekday shifts: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Weekend day shifts: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
After hour call: 12 hour week night shifts or 15 hour weekend night shifts
What is your schedule like?
A 1.0 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) position entails 4 afterhours call per 4 week cycle and 1 service week (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm) every 5 weeks. During service weeks physicians cover either General Pediatrics or Neonatal Services.
Most Pediatricians in our group see patients in their community clinics when not on service at KGH.
What are the options for Full Time Equivalent commitment?
From 0.50 - 1.0 FTE

What is the evaluation system?
The hospital does a 360 evaluation within 12 months after you start working, which incorporates evaluation by colleagues, ancillary staff and nurses.
Who is your employer?
Pediatricians are independent providers who provide care to patients admitted to Kelowna General Hospital. Remuneration is based on a Fee-for-Service model.
What is the typical workload on an average day?
Kelowna General Hospital has a 14 bed, Tier 4 NICU and we provide care to newborns from 30 weeks gestation and onwards. The number of births at Kelowna General Hospital exceed 1800 per annum. Our hospital serves as a referral site for high risk newborns or those in need of escalation of care and can increase capacity to 20 beds.
The Tier 4 General Pediatric ward has 10 beds and provides inpatient care to patients under the age of 17 years with an average of 1200 cases admitted to the unit per annum. The unit can increase capacity to 20 beds.
How long is a usual contract?
We have full time and variable term locum opportunities available.
What is health insurance in British Columbia like?
Medical Services Plan is free public health insurance that covers the medically required services of physicians and surgeons. There are options through Doctors of BC and other private organizations to purchase additional health insurance for prescription and dental coverage.
What is the school system in Kelowna like?
There are excellent options available for both public and private schools ranging from elementary to high school ages, including public French immersion and Francophone options. Kelowna is also home to UBC Okanagan and the Okanagan College for post-secondary education.
What is the process for medical licensure in British Columbia for Internationally trained physicians?
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC has a pathway for International Medical Graduates. This process requires source verification of your medical education. Our team has experience with navigating this process and sponsoring physicians who require a provisional license.
Who covers malpractice insurance?
Each physician purchases insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association, a federal non-profit which provides legal defense and liability protection for the majority of Canadian physicians. Costs are approximately $450/month.
What is the best part of your program?
As a group we provide excellent standardized patient care whilst embracing the diversity and individuality each team member brings to the group. All members are involved with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, CME and quality improvement projects. Our Spring and Fall Retreats provide opportunity for staff to relax and connect on a more personal level whilst enjoying the beautiful Okanagan outdoors.
Are there teaching opportunities?
Yes, our department is affiliated with the Southern Medical Program through UBCO (University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus). Staff are expected to partake in clinical teaching, skills training and research supervision for undergraduate students and postgraduate Family Medicine and Pediatric Residents.
Which EMR do you use?
Meditech. All charts are electronic for reports and labs, but notes and orders are currently still handwritten in a paper chart. There is a plan for a transition to a fully electronic EMR, for charting and order entry over the next few years.
What is the tax structure like in British Columbia?
BC have different income tax brackets ranging from 12.29% ($98,901 - $120,094) to 20.5% (over $227,091). Federal income tax ranges from 20.5% to 33%. Incorporated MDs pay a tax rate of 13% of monies left in their corporation.
What is orientation/onboarding like?
Detailed in-person orientation is provided and hardcopy orientation material is available.
Are there any elective opportunities?
Yes, we support learners to come to KGH to learn more about our program in person, with the option of an elective during residency. Please contact us if you are interested and we will help you through this process.
Is there funding for a site visit?
Yes, serious applicants are invited to come and meet our team, see our site and explore Kelowna. Transportation and accommodation costs can be covered.

Our program is looking for General Pediatricians to join our group. Scheduling is flexible and there is also opportunity to blend hospital work and outpatient care. We also have experience working with foreign medical graduates who obtain a provisional license.
